Your Dream Magazine

So the other day, I flew into a panic because I couldn't find my latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. (Yes, I subscribe.) I turned the house virtually upside-down and nothing. So, despite the fact that the issue had most definitely arrived the previous Friday, and that it was somewhere burrowed in a room in my house, I actually went out and bought another copy.

That is how much I love this magazine.

Which got me to thinking: if I could work for, full-time or freelance, any magazine on the planet, EW would surely be it. As I've said here before, I love pop culture, and I also love a hearty dose of both snark and smarts, and this magazine has all in spades. Not that I don't love plenty of other magazines (from my clogged mailbox, you can tell that I do!), but I had to avow myself to just one, it would be EW.

What about you guys? What magazine would you actually shell out twice for? And which would be your dream to write for or work for?

I totally agree--I read the EW blog PopWatch several times a day and think to myself, "How great would it be to write snarky comments and blurbs all day about a subject I love anyway?" If anyone is unfamiliar with ew.com, I highly recommend it. It's one of my favorite websites!

Definitely Self. When my first FOB came out in last month's issue, I couldn't wait for the issue to arrive in the mail, so I bought one from the newstand. Later I got the copy from my subscription and another copy from my editor, but that meant I had extras to share with friends and family. I love Self's message about taking care of yourself before you take care of friends, kids, coworkers, etc. The advice is always positive and realistic. It's written for real women, not super-models

Susan, I like SELF a lot too. I was just reading the Liv Tyler issue this week and thought that it was really well-done. As far as snarky + healthful, I don't think you can beat Women's Health.

Congrats on landing your first piece there!!

The Oxford American. I fear its editors wouldn't fine me thoughty and intellectual enough for it. Alas.

I love SELF too!

But, I'll admit it, I'm kind of obsessed with Martha Stewart Living. I know, I know, I must be 30 going on 60, but I just love to curl up with this mag and dream about making custard or pies or cookies or painting an end table, or knitting something--things I don't ever have time to do--heck, I have no idea how to knit. I've never written for MSL, nor have I ever pitched them--which is kind of odd. I guess I'm happy with that, because the magazine is my treat!

I love EW. It is the complete "bathtub" magazine. Not really into gossip magazines (though they are great for the gym. Though I am not great for the gym)but EW offers news on movies and tv that I find interesting and entertaining. I wish I were that witty or lucky enough to work with people who love entertainment like I do.

I am a magazine junkie ... EW is great for upcoming tv shows, movies, etc, without the focus being completely on who is or isn't out of rehab or is pregnant.
I also love Mental Floss. It's a great magazine of all kinds of trivia and information.
National Geographic Traveller and Budget Travel allow me to dream of travelling when my bank account won't allow me to ....
I also subscribe to Newsweek, SELF, Smithsonian, and Vegetarian Times. Like I said, I'm a junkie!

Nerd alert: I subscribe to and love The Economist, and The Smithsonian...but I also subscribe to Sunset (so retro) Cottage Living, Mountain Living, O (Oprah), and Prevention. I'm constantly pruning the list...two years ago I had something like 14 magazines coming to the house at once and never had a chance to read them all....now I've let their subscriptions expire and try to be more selective. Am currently considering a food magazine such as Gourmet.
