I'm curious if you make any income from your blog? If so, can you tell me a little bit about how that all works? Seems like a "hot topic" in the freelance writing world these days.
Er, no. I don't make diddly from this monstrosity. If only. :)
I don't think that blogs have become a hot topic because of the possibility of income. Rather, they're all the rage because they allow writers a bit of self-expression without any editorial constraints, and they're also an excellent promotional and marketing tool.
That said, I do think that HUGE blogs, like PerezHilton.com (um, not that I read it, like, four times a day), generate income from ad sales. But unless you're bringing in hundreds of thousands of hits, I'd say this is unlikely.
But then again, I'm not sure. Anyone else out there have any other thoughts?

I currently earn enough through Google Adsense to pay for my Publisher's Weekly subscription, memberships to some writers' associations, and to help pay for some office supplies.
My blogs (mainly Inkygirl: Daily Diversions For Writers but also my personal blog, Blatherings) don't attract a HUGE ton of traffic. I'm sure most people reading this comment haven't heard of either, for instance. :-)
I don't earn nearly enough to make a living at it but y'know, I'd be blogging anyway....so why not get a bit of income for it?
CSMonitor.com recently ran an article about blogging for income, if anyone's interested.
Wow, thanks Inkygirl! I had no idea. I'm off to check out that article. Thanks for posting.
Making money is certainly a possibility. I currently make somewhere in the low XXX.XX range each month off of three blogs that I run. On average, each of them is about XX.XX each. Certainly not a living, but enough to supplement my income by about 3,000 a year.
I've been curious about Google Adsense, guess it might be worth a try. Also thank you, Inkygirl, for the tip on that article.
Great question and link to article. Thanks for posting, Allison and to inkygirl for the info.
Allison,
I think you nailed it...
Expression for writers, community for writers, and the promotional aspect make blogging fun and helpful.
Thanks for all your great info!
truly,
Sylvia C.

Making money from blogging is almost as rare as an actual unicorn prancing in my backyard. The fact that I snagged a paying blogging gig was a dream. I wish I could have rode that gravy-train a little longer--too bad it was just a six-month contract. As for actually getting checks from AdSense... not likely. Blog because you love it, not because you think it will bring in some spending money.
I don't put ads on my blog, but I have made money in an interesting way -- a reader of my blog is also a parenting magazine editor and she read something I wrote on my blog and offered me a few writing gigs based on that. So, not a lot, but it was fun to say I made some cash from blogging!
